The Platinum Rule says "treat others as *they* want to be treated." The difference is enormous. A founder added his own sales force to a joint venture, reasoning that if a partner did the same for him, he would be delighted. His partner was furious -- interpreting the move as interference, distrust, and territorial encroachment. The Golden Rule had produced the exact opposite of its intended effect because it substituted the founder's preferences for his partner's. The Platinum Rule requires a harder discipline: suspending your own frame of reference and inhabiting someone else's. It demands the listening, reading, and understanding skills covered in this category's sibling frameworks -- and then goes one step further, translating comprehension into behaviour calibrated to the other person's actual needs. Connection is not a feeling.
