# Storytelling Hooks: The Six Psychology Levers
- Short-form content lives or dies in the first 2 seconds.
- A strong hook stacks 2–3 levers in one line; a full script runs them in order.
- **A hook has two jobs: stop the scroll AND filter for the right viewer.** A hook that grabs everyone attracts the wrong audience — they leave at second 3, retention tanks, and the algorithm buries the video. Qualifying words ("freelancers", "if you run ads") cost a little reach and buy retention plus the right follows.
- This is the **core skill** of the storytelling suite. Other skills (long-form-youtube, titles-and-thumbnails, carousel-narratives, email-hooks, wireframe-writer, wireframe-reviewer) recap these levers and link back here.
## When to Use
- Writing a reel / Short / TikTok script or opening line.
- Any niche or business: education, SaaS, fitness, finance, faith, food, B2B, personal brand.
- The moment must stop the scroll before the brain decides to move on.
- When a draft feels flat and you need to diagnose which lever is missing.
## The Six Levers (Quick Reference)
| # | Lever | One-line job |
|---|-------|--------------|
| 1 | Curiosity gap | Open a loop, don't close it |
| 2 | Emotional mirror | Target the feeling, not the fact |
| 3 | Conflict engine | Goal + obstacle = tension |
| 4 | Relatability | Broadest shared feeling → "this is me" |
| 5 | Pattern + surprise | Set expectation, then break it |
| 6 | Three-act structure | Setup → problem → resolution |
