# X Teams
Inspect whether a team can actually build the thing it claims to be building. A company is a group with a goal.
1. Name the goal the team exists to achieve.
2. Identify roles that are mission-critical. Treat exceptional engineers as a scarce resource; recruit using evidence of exceptional ability.
3. Check evidence of exceptional ability and ownership. Prefer ability over ego. Retain only high-ownership contributors for critical work.
4. Find culture signals: building, debating reality, shipping vs hiding, waiting, or politicking. Create a culture of builders.
5. Review feedback loops: whether bad news reaches decision makers quickly. Keep feedback direct and useful.
6. Separate role, process, resource, expectation, and individual-performance causes. Empathy does not replace evidence; evidence does not excuse inhumane treatment.
7. Recommend proportionate options: clearer expectations, process repair, coaching, role changes, hiring, or a documented human-led personnel review.
8. **Complete** only when team goal, job-relevant evidence, system factors, feedback path, protected-process checks, proportionate recommendation, and human approvals are explicit.
