# X Engineering
Use when the question is what can be built, improved, shipped, and made reliable—not only imagined.
1. Name the product or outcome.
2. Identify the hardest engineering problem that controls value.
3. Estimate the theoretical ideal and cost structure; separate invention, integration, production, and maintenance. Use the idiot index (raw component cost vs finished-system cost) when cost is the lever.
4. Ask what the accountable chief engineer must understand directly across product, cost, design, manufacturing, and operations.
5. Find where engineering can reduce cost, improve quality, increase speed, or unlock a new capability.
6. Check whether org boundaries separate design, engineering, manufacturing, or financial reality; prefer integrated ownership.
7. Recommend the highest-leverage engineering focus: build, buy, delete, or invent. Push radical breakthroughs only when incremental improvement cannot close the gap.
8. **Complete** only when theoretical ideal, cost structure, hardest problem, integration boundary, leverage point, and recommendation are explicit.
Domain anchors: engineering as practical magic; technology wins when it changes the competitive field; product taste is learnable through observation and iteration; combine engineering and financial fluency.
