# Healthcare SEO
Healthcare is the strictest YMYL category. Google's quality guidance treats medical content as capable of causing real harm, and the assessment reflects that — sites without credentialed authorship and institutional sourcing were substantially demoted in successive medical-focused updates and have not recovered.
The bar is not "write good content". It is medically reviewed, credentialed, sourced content, or don't publish it.
## What ranking here actually looks like
For condition, symptom and treatment queries, the top results are almost entirely national health services, major medical institutions, academic sources and a small number of established health publishers. A private clinic will not outrank a national health body on "symptoms of X", and shouldn't plan to.
Where a provider *can* win:
- **Local treatment intent** — "knee replacement Manchester", "private GP near me". Local pack plus local organic
- **Specific procedure pages** for procedures you actually perform
- **Cost and access questions** — "how much does X cost privately", "how long is the wait for X" — which institutional sources answer poorly
- **Consultant and specialist name searches**
- **Comparison of treatment options**, from a clinical perspective, with named authorship
The strategic implication: **compete on access, cost, locality and specific expertise. Don't compete on general medical information.**
