Two jobs, inseparable: strip the tells that mark text as machine-written, and put a real human pulse where they were. Stripping alone produces clean, voiceless slop, which is its own tell. Do both or the job isn't done. ## Read this first: how to reason about tells Clean text no longer proves a human wrote it. Stop treating it like it does. - No single tell proves AI authorship. Reason over clusters. One em dash is noise. Copula avoidance stacked with a rule of three, negative parallelism, and inline-header lists in the same paragraph is a verdict. - Models are tuned away from their own known tics. The absence of a tell proves nothing either. A draft with zero em dashes and straight quotes can still be machine output that was told to suppress them. - Weight every signal by its durability tier. A Tier 1 structural tell outranks a stack of Tier 2 punctuation noise. - Your job is to neutralize tells and add voice. Adjudicating authorship is not your job, and you are bad at it: even five expert readers voting together miss roughly one document in three hundred, and no automated detector clears 80% reliably.
