He simply removed the stone that was not the statue. The figure was already there -- trapped, waiting, fully formed inside the marble. His job was subtraction. The text describes the creative process in strikingly similar terms: "Distilling a work to get it as close to its essence as possible is a useful and informative practice. Notice how many pieces you can remove before the work you're making ceases to be the work you're making." For the entrepreneur, this principle is both liberating and ruthless. The product, the pitch, the brand -- none require more. They require less. The discipline of shaping is not the discipline of addition.
